CURATED: EMILY EDELMAN

Emily Edelman is a generative artist and designer living and working in Brooklyn. Drawing on a background in typography and the design of physical spaces, Edelman’s work makes use of classic grid systems in new ways, pushing the definition of communication and text as art objects. Edelman’s work has been shown internationally with Art Blocks, Bright Moments, Verse Works, theVERSEverse, Artsy, and VellumLA.

Edelman, who holds a BFA from RISD in Graphic Design, curated the recent New York artist-based show On Water and is the cofounder of Token Art, an art and tech unconference. Her first long-form generative series was ASEMICA, released on Art Blocks Curated in November 2021.

ILLUMINATED by Emily Edelman explores communication beyond what written language can reach. We find feeling—and meaning—in the bright wash of an epiphany, in the sound of familiar voices, or in the design of a book. Words alone can do so much, but some things remain in the space just beyond them.
The characters Emily Edelman used in ILLUMINATED do not belong to any language. They were created using a variant of the typographic generative algorithm for ASEMICA (Art Blocks Curated, 2021).

Graphic designer turned generative artist, Emily Edelman, compels us to question the meaning of written text beyond its overt layer — the message.
Having explored themes related to typography, communication, scale, colour, and the contrasts between physical & digital design theories, she now presents works in the form of systems of text, the understanding of which requires not a dictionary, but instead an open heart and soul. Experimenting with the concept of Asemic writing, leads her to the praxis of generating text that conveys meaning, which is predominantly aesthetic, rather than semantic in nature.
