CURATED: DARIA RASTUNINA

Daria Rastunina (born 1990) is a Russian multidisciplinary artist. She is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia working with generative methods in art, such as artificial intelligence, through a combination of traditional painting techniques and digital methods.

Rastunina often works with topics that she experiences on her own, with topics that raise the question of a person's appearance, their role and their relationship with the world. Her works draw inspiration from modern life experience, as well as the influence of technology on it. In Rastunina's art, a person is placed in a space between two worlds, nature and technology, with which he is inextricably linked, sometimes being the center connecting them, and sometimes a hostage trapped in his own being.

Daria Rastunina has exhibited in Russia, in the cities of Moscow, Vladimir, Ivanovo, Palekh, as well as in China, London, Indonesia.

In Daria Rastunina's series GHOSTLY, the artist studies subjective recollection of the image of reality, as well as the importance of the present moment. Each is a code, a fragment of a larger whole. Rastunina investigates the states and deformations that modernity is experiencing and considers the impact of artificial intelligence on the reliability of the environment based on personal and historical experience. GHOSTLY is part of the exhibition RECOLLECTION. AI AND MEMORY presented by EXPANDED.ART in collaboration with The NFT Gallery at their galleries in New York and London, 11 April – 13 May 2023. 19 artists explore the idea of further challenging the concreteness of human memory—personal or collective—through creative collaboration with AI. Memories are nebulous. Scientific studies and phenomena such as "The Mandela Effect" have shown that humans rarely recall things in their unbiased exactitude. Artificial Intelligence already assists human memory in the form of predictive text and GPS navigation.
