Kathrin Wessling is a German author, artist, and social media expert. She has over 70,000 followers on Twitter and Instagram who follow her posts and articles on topics such as feminism, mental illness, and pop culture. Her latest books are "Nix passiert" and "Super, und dir?", the latter was hailed by the press and readers as "the novel of her generation". She also writes regularly for ZEIT ONLINE, SPIEGEL, and many more. She has worked for stern.de, DER SPIEGEL, Mit Vergnügen, and Storymachine, among others. Kathrin Wessling lives in Berlin.

ABOUT THE WORK
"I paint my pictures in my small 1-room apartment. I could also say studio or apartment; people in Berlin find that more chic, but I prefer to stick to what it is. Just like with my paintings. I paint what is. I paint who I am. I paint what I am. I paint myself.

YES and MAYBE were created after a breakup in 2022, when weekends and evenings were long and nights were dark. Painting saved my (pardon my French) ass. I painted when I was angry, when I was sad, which I was actually all the time, when I was lonely or alone, or when I was just bored. Painting evokes in me what people assume writing does for me: I lose myself completely in it; I am focused, calm, and happy. Painting is my free, wild garden after writing has become a cramped house. I can express with painting what I otherwise cannot. In this series, it is all my pain and all my anger.

These two paintings show all these emotions. But they also show the continuation, the non-giving up, when all you want to do is scream. I threw up my heart on the canvas until I could breathe again. They remind me that I carry a gift inside me. The gift of still being able to create something out of the greatest chaos, fear, and pain that makes other people feel something, that moves and cracks others up, pinches their sides a little, and says: no matter how bad it is right now, you're not alone in this."

The frame is black ayous wood with acrylic glass that has 84% UV protection. Framed dimensions are 83 x 63 cm; 27.8 x 19.9 in.

ABOUT THE 24-HOUR EDITION DROP
The 24-HOUR EDITION DROP is a concept which allows artists to sell an unlimited amount of physical editions within the limited time frame of 24 hours on EXPANDED.ART. Each 24-HOUR EDITION DROP edition will be available for 24 hours only, then never again.

ABOUT THE EDITION NUMBER
The editions are numbered randomly, i.e., the edition number is not chronologically assigned to the time of order receipt. All 24-HOUR EDITION DROP prints are made to order. Each artwork will be produced and personalized specifically for each client; therefore, the artwork is not eligible for return.

"I'm too impatient to spend much time preparing. On good days, I just quickly cover my desk, the floor, and the clothing rail, which is right next to the easel, with painter's tarpaulin; on bad days, I have to start immediately and can't stand any delay. Because I do not have a studio, I buy the canvases ready-made and then take them home by public transport, which, I must admit, is a real torment.

I usually don't know beforehand what I'm going to paint; I let feelings guide me, and if I want to paint something but don't know how to do it, I watch YouTube videos explaining it until I can. I know it's not fancy. I applied to an art school once (hi HAW Hamburg!) and they rejected me. I was so sad that I didn't even pick up my portfolio again. I didn't paint for over 10 years after that, and when I started again, the most important thing to me was and is that I do everything the way it suits me. It's not a glamorous or great story; it's a story of failure that hurts me to this day. I'm still often ashamed to show something of myself because I don't work as professionally as people who have studied it and have studios." – Kathrin Wessling
